Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister, Japan
Tokyo: The face of the Prime Minister in Japan may change next month. The current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has refused to contest the party president election to be held in September. This information has been given in the news of Japan’s government TV channel ‘NHK’.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has informed officials of his ruling party that he will not run in the party president election in September. Kishida was elected president of his ruling Liberal Democratic Party in 2021 and his term ends in September.
Kishida’s exit from the race means that the new leader who wins the party vote will succeed him as prime minister as the LDP controls both houses of parliament. Kishida’s tenure has been marred by corruption and scandals involving several of his party leaders, causing his popularity to drop to below 20 percent.
