Ranchi. A cargo ship sank in the Ganges river at around one o’clock on Thursday night between Sahibganj in Jharkhand to Manihari in Kolkata. There were 14 trucks on this ship carrying stones and stone chips. Eight-ten people aboard these trucks are missing after the accident. It is suspected that these people have drowned in the river. However, no death has been confirmed so far. The crashed ship has been brought to Sahibganj Ganga Ghat in damaged condition at around 10 am on Friday. The ship’s driver has told that there was a loud explosion in one of the trucks on the ship. The explosion was probably caused by a tyre of the truck. After this the ship became unbalanced and 5 out of 14 trucks loaded on it got stuck in the river. The ship was going openly from Sahibganj to Manihari. On receiving information about the accident, Sahibganj DC Ram Niwas Yadav and SP Anuranjan Kispotta reached Ganga Ghat and inquired about the incident.
Deputy Commissioner Ram Niwas Yadav said that the accident was reported to the NDRF team and rescue work would start soon. The technical reasons for the accident are being ascertained. Let us tell you that there is a large scale business of stone chips from Sahebganj, Rajmahal and Pakur areas of Jharkhand. Dozens of trucks carrying stone chips are sent daily to Kolkata and surrounding areas via cargo ships.
