Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor Shantishree D Pandit on Friday asked the university’s security officials to submit a report on the provocative slogans allegedly raised during the presidential debate for the student union elections on the campus. Candidates from various political parties contesting for the post of President in the JNU Students Union elections gave very fiery speeches on Thursday. Some candidates also targeted the central government on the issues of Manipur violence and electoral bonds.
Some candidates raised anti-incumbency slogans targeting the ruling party and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). ABVP candidates are also in the fray. JNU said in a statement, ‘It has come to light that during the presidential debate of the JNUSU (Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union) elections held on March 21, some students had allegedly raised some inflammatory slogans, which are completely unacceptable. , because it may hurt the sentiments and sensitivities of various sections of the JNU community. The university administration has taken cognizance of this matter and the Vice Chancellor has directed the security officials to investigate the matter and submit a report.

Voting for the student union elections in JNU was held in two phases on Friday and the counting of votes will begin at 9 pm and the results will be declared on Sunday. During the presidential debate, voters from the disabled category staged a protest outside the School of Languages and some disabled students sat on a hunger strike against a comment made by RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad presidential candidate Umesh Chandra Ajmira.
