Washington: US President Joe Biden has pardoned thousands of former military personnel convicted of homosexual sex. Biden said he was ‘correcting a historic wrong’. Biden’s move has pardoned those soldiers who were convicted under the former Article 125 of the ‘Uniform Code of Military Justice’, which considered homosexuality a crime. However, this law has now been repealed.

This law was implemented in the US military in 1951, it was amended again in 2013 and it only prohibits forceful acts. With the pardon of these military personnel by the US President, they will now be able to file an application to get proof that their conviction has been expunged and they will also be able to apply for salary and other benefits.

Biden said in a statement, “Today I am correcting a historic wrong by using my pardon authority to pardon many former military personnel who were convicted simply because they are who they are.” He said, “We have an equal responsibility to all our soldiers, including our LGBTQ community, to ensure that they are properly trained to deal with any threat and that they and their families are taken care of when they return home. Today we are making progress in that direction. ”
‘Historic step’
The Modern Military, the largest organization of LGBTQ+ service members and their families, said the decision was a “historic step toward justice and equality” and called on the military to approve the pardon as soon as possible. (AP)
