Kamala Harris
Washington: US Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday officially secured the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. With this, she has become the first Indian-African woman to get a presidential election ticket from a major political party in the country. Harris (59) will face former President and Republican Party candidate Donald Trump in the general election to be held in November. Last Friday, Harris was declared the ruling Democratic Party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
Biden drops out of the presidential race
Harris had then said, “I am proud to be the Democratic candidate for the US presidency. I will officially accept the nomination next week. This campaign is about people being united by patriotism and fighting for the best.” Last month, President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race in the upcoming election, after which Indian-origin Vice President Harris was declared the 2024 presidential candidate of the ruling Democratic Party.
Delegates voted in favor of Harris
Harris’s candidacy was officially announced after five days of online voting by delegates of the Democratic National Convention. In a statement issued before midnight, the party said that 99 percent of the delegates voted in favor of Harris. 4,567 delegates across the country voted for Harris. Harris will now officially accept her nomination. With this, Harris has become the first Indian-African woman to get a presidential ticket from a major political party in America. She has also become the first Indian-American to become a presidential candidate from the Republican or Democratic Party.
