Kanwar Yatra name plate dispute now in Supreme Court

The matter of writing the names and mobile numbers (name plates) of the owners on the shops and food carts on the routes of Kanwar Yatra has now reached the Supreme Court. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP from West Bengal Mahua Moitra has approached the Supreme Court against the orders of the UP and Uttarakhand governments. TMC MP Mahua Moitra has challenged the decision of the UP and Uttarakhand governments in the Supreme Court.

The marginalized class is being targeted

The petition filed by Mahua Moitra in the Supreme Court states that the order issued with the aim of respecting the food preferences of the pilgrims and maintaining law and order is completely arbitrary. This order of the government violates constitutional rights. The most vulnerable and marginalized section of the society is being targeted to maintain law and order in the state.

Professor Apoorvanand and Aakar Patel also filed a petition

TMC MP Mahua Moitra along with Professor Apoorvanand and writer Aakar Patel have filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the orders of the UP and Uttarakhand governments. Recently, the governments of both states have directed to put up name plates of the owners and operators of all the shops selling food items on the Kanwar route.

This order will affect the livelihood of Muslims

The petition filed by Apoorvanand and Aakar Patel states that the order issued by the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand affects the rights under Articles 14, 15 and 17. It also affects the rights of Muslim people, which is a violation of Article 19(1)(g). This order will affect their livelihood.

The petition further states that the order supports the practice of ‘untouchability’, which is clearly prohibited in any form under Article 17 of the Constitution of India.
