New Delhi. There are widespread protests against Governor Thawarchand Gehlot by Congress workers, leaders and MLAs in Karnataka. This situation arose when the Governor ordered an inquiry into an alleged corruption case against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. In this case, land misappropriation under the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has been alleged. Congress MLC Ivan D’Souza further sharpened the tone of protest and gave a stern warning to the Governor. Citing the example of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said that if the Governor does not withdraw his order, he will also have to flee from Karnataka in the same way as Sheikh Hasina had to flee from Bangladesh. He also said that if his demand is not met, the next protest will be held directly at the Governor’s Office.
What is MUDA Case?
In the MUDA case, it is alleged that Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s wife Parvati was given 14 developed land pieces in exchange for her incomplete land pieces. These lands were acquired when Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was in power. In this case, the Chief Minister is accused of corruption and misuse of power. It is being claimed that this alleged scam is worth Rs 4000 to 5000 crore, which has caused political turmoil in the entire state.
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has ordered an inquiry into the matter, which has been challenged by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the Karnataka High Court. Siddaramaiah has claimed in his petition that the Governor’s order is politically motivated and unjust. He insisted on his innocence and said that he has no history of corruption in his 40-year political career.
Congress’s aggressive stance
The Congress party has called the Governor’s order politically motivated and termed it an attempt to defame the government. The party leaders believe that the Governor’s move is a conspiracy to tarnish the image of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Congress leaders and workers took to the streets and protested against the Governor and demanded that the investigation orders be withdrawn immediately. Meanwhile, the warning of Congress MLC Ivan D’Souza has further heated up the political atmosphere. He said that if the Governor does not withdraw his order, he will have to flee from Karnataka. The Congress says that this fight is not just for the prestige of Siddaramaiah, but of the entire Karnataka.
