Bangalore. The first day of SSLC (Class 10) exam was conducted peacefully across Karnataka amid hijab row. Most of the students took their exams in uniform and only a few did not participate and some girl students were sent back for wearing the hijab.
The education department has suspended an inspector for refusing to remove the hijab while conducting the examination at KSTV High School. Noor Fatima, who was on exam duty, came wearing a hijab. Education department sources said that when he was asked to remove it, he refused and was later sent back from the examination center and suspended.
A girl student, who came to the local government school in Bagalkot district wearing a hijab, decided not to take the exam when she was asked to remove it.
In another incident, police in Chikodi town of Belagavi district detained 6 fake candidates, including a student, who appeared for the exam on behalf of other students. The officials caught him while inspecting his hall ticket.
Anushree, a Class X student who was taking her exams, collapsed and died of a heart attack at the T. Narsipur center in Mysore district.
Belagavi MLA Anil Benke welcomed the girl students wearing some hijab and burqa with flowers. Later these students removed the hijab and burqa and appeared in the examination.
Many parents of minority girl students who came to drop their children said that education is important for them.
8,73,846 students have enrolled for SSLC exam in this academic year, out of which 4,52,732 are boys and 4,21,110 are girls. Four third gender students and 5,307 disabled children are also taking the exam.
Section 144 was imposed at 3,444 examination centers and around 3,444 examination centers across the state and tight police security was deployed at all examination centers to avoid any demonstration or untoward incident. Over 60,000 government officials supervised the examinations.
