New Delhi. Today, the festival of Karva Chauth is being celebrated with great pomp across the country. It is an important Hindu festival celebrated by married women in India, during which they fast from sunrise to moonrise for the well-being and long life of their husbands. Moonrise has special significance in this fast. On this occasion, women break their fast after seeing the moon and offering Arghya to it. This festival has deep cultural and emotional significance, with women eagerly waiting for the rise of the moon. Interestingly, every year the sighting of the moon on Karva Chauth becomes a matter of curiosity.
Importance of Karva Chauth moonrise
On Karva Chauth, married women observe a fast from sunrise, abstaining from food and water, to pray for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. This day is celebrated with full devotion and dedication. Women take a pledge of ‘Nirjala Vrat’, which means fasting for the whole day without drinking even a drop of water. The fast continues till seeing the moonrise. Women break their fast after the moon is seen in the evening sky. They first look at the moon through a sieve and offer ‘arghya’ (a ritual of offering water) to it to seek its blessings. After this, they perform rituals with burning lamps, offer prayers and finally, their husbands help them end the fast. This moment of moonrise is eagerly awaited, as it symbolizes the successful completion of the fast and the safety and well-being of their husbands.
