New Delhi. In a major move to enhance connectivity and movement of goods by road across India, the central government on Friday approved eight national high-speed road corridor projects with a total length of 936 km with an investment of Rs 50,655 crore. The completion of these projects is expected to generate direct and indirect employment of about 4.42 crore man-days. These include the 4-lane Kharagpur-Morgram high-speed corridor. It is said that when this corridor is completed, it will have the potential to transform the economy of entire West Bengal.
4-lane Kharagpur-Morgram National High-Speed Corridor
The 231 km long 4-lane access-controlled high-speed corridor between Kharagpur and Morgram will be developed in Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a total capital cost of Rs 10,247 crore. The new corridor will complement the existing 2-lane national highway, increasing traffic capacity by about 5 times between Kharagpur and Morgram. It will provide efficient connectivity for traffic between states like West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh etc. on one end and the north-eastern part of the country on the other. With the construction of this corridor, the travel time for freight vehicles between Kharagpur and Morgram will be reduced from the current 9 to 10 hours to 5 to 6 hours. 7 other projects also approved
The projects approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs include 6-lane Agra-Gwalior National High-Speed Corridor, 6-lane Tharad-Deesa-Mehsana-Ahmedabad National High-Speed Corridor, 4-lane Ayodhya Ring Road, 4-lane section between Pathalgaon and Gumla of Raipur-Ranchi National High-Speed Corridor, 6-lane Kanpur Ring Road, North Guwahati Bypass and widening/improvement of existing Guwahati Bypass, and 30 km long elevated Nashik Phata-Khed Corridor near Pune.
