New Delhi (Kolkata Doctor Rape Murder)The case of brutality and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, has shaken the entire country. The question once again comes to the fore on the safety of women. It is indeed unfortunate that such an incident takes place in a public space like a hospital, where a large number of people are present. The accused in the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case is now in police custody.
In this case, Kolkata Police has arrested a civic volunteer. The accused has been identified as Sanjay Roy. A Kolkata court has sent the civic volunteer arrested on 10 August on 14-day police remand. Let us tell you that this case is about the brutality with a junior doctor in RG Kar Medical College-Hospital on 9 August. The deceased was a second year postgraduate student and trainee doctor of the Department of Chest Medicine in the medical college.
What happened on August 9?
RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is located in a crowded area like Lalbazar in Kolkata city. According to local reports from Kolkata, the junior doctor was on night duty at the hospital on Thursday. At around 2 am, she had dinner with some doctors from her team. Then she went to the seminar hall to rest for a while. After this, there was no trace of her. At 6 am, she was found half naked and dead.

injury marks on the body
The initial postmortem report had revealed that the woman doctor had been raped. The body of the junior woman doctor was lying on the mattress. There were blood stains on the mattress. There was blood on the mouth and both eyes of the deceased woman doctor. There were blood marks on the private parts and nail marks on the face. Injury marks were also found on the lips, neck, stomach, left heel and finger of the right hand. The victim’s father had lodged a complaint of rape and murder at the local Tala police station on Friday.
What action did the police take?
As soon as the matter came to light, senior officials of Lalbazar reached the hospital. Apart from the homicide branch, members of the women’s complaint cell were also present there. A special investigation team of Kolkata Police was formed to investigate the incident. There was no CCTV camera in the seminar hall where the incident took place. Therefore, the police questioned the people nearby. The SIT also questioned a civic volunteer posted in the hospital on Friday night.

A Bluetooth earphone was found at the crime scene. In the CCTV footage, the accused Sanjay Roy was seen entering the seminar hall at 4 am. During this time he was wearing earphones in his ears. After some time when he came out of the hall, he did not have earphones. The police tried to connect the earphones found at the crime scene to the phones of all the suspects and it got connected to Sanjay Roy’s phone. During interrogation, Sanjay confessed to rape and murder.
What sections were imposed?
The police have registered a case under Section 103 (1) (murder) and Section 64 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS). After the autopsy report came out, the case of rape and murder was confirmed. The police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the hospital management has formed a 3-member investigation panel. After the incident, medical students as well as various political parties protested outside the hospital. A CBI inquiry is being demanded in the case.
What is the doctor saying?
The doctors of the medical college are continuously protesting. The Indian Medical Association has clearly stated that if the investigation is not completed in 48 hours, they will go on strike and protest across the country. On the other hand, the doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital say that an attempt is being made to save someone else by declaring Sanjay Roy as the accused. They fear that what happened to that lady doctor on 9th August can happen to them tomorrow.
