Dubai/Kuwait City: Kuwaiti authorities have identified the bodies of 45 Indians and three Filipinos who lost their lives in a fire at a building housing foreign workers, a top official said. Kuwait has assured full cooperation in conducting a speedy investigation into the incident and sending the bodies of the deceased. At least 49 foreign workers were killed and 50 others injured in a fire that broke out in a seven-storey building in the southern city of Mangaf on Wednesday. The building was housing 196 migrant workers.

First Deputy Prime Minister, Home Minister and Defense Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah said that officials have identified 48 bodies, including 45 Indians and three Filipinos, according to the English daily newspaper ‘Arab Times’. The first deputy prime minister said that efforts are still on to identify the remaining one body. Meanwhile, Kuwait’s fire force has said that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, who arrived in Kuwait to review the assistance to be provided to the Indians injured in the incident and to ensure the speedy return of the bodies of the deceased, has met Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya. Singh also met some Indians injured in the incident and assured them of all possible help from the Government of India. He met First Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad, who expressed condolences on behalf of the Emir and directed to ensure all necessary help and support.

A series of arrests began
First Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad said Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has issued instructions to distribute financial assistance to the families of the deceased, although he did not mention the amount of compensation. Meanwhile, a Kuwaiti citizen and several foreigners have been arrested on charges of murder and causing injury due to negligence in safety measures after the incident. Sheikh Fahad warned that action will be taken without any prior warning on any violation related to building construction. The owner of the affected building will be detained until the investigation is completed. (Language)
