Chandigarh The Punjab government has given the final opportunity of the ‘One Time Settlement’ (OTS) scheme to pay its outstanding property tax to the property owners. The scheme ends on August 31, after which strict action will be taken against the defaulters. The government has announced to keep all the facility centers open on Saturday and Sunday (30-31 August) this week for the convenience of the people to deposit the outstanding tax. The scheme was implemented on 1 April 2025, which aims to pay his dues without any interest or fine. Describing the response of the people as positive, the government said that so far more than ₹ 250 crore has been recovered. For this reason, the period of the scheme was extended twice. Now the government has made it clear that no more expansion will be given after 31 August, so that there can be justice to those who have paid tax on time.
According to the data, out of about 1.8 lakh commercial and industrial properties of Punjab, 1.1 lakhs are still outstanding, the total amount is about ₹ 580 crore. The large part of this amount owes about 35,000 medium and large property owners. The government has warned that strict action will be initiated against these people from 1 September. The Punjab government has appealed to the property owners to take advantage of the opportunity.
The government says that property tax is an important source of revenue for municipal corporations and city councils. This money is used to improve basic facilities like cleaning, health services, solid waste management and roads in cities. The government says that this step is not only to raise revenue, but also to make cities more developed and modern. By depositing dues, citizens can directly contribute to the development of Punjab.
