Lathmar Holi is mainly celebrated in the cities of Barsana and Nandgaon, located near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. According to popular Hindu beliefs, this tradition of Lathmar Holi dates back to the time of the divine couple Radha Krishna. When the men of Nandgaon (Lord Sri Krishna’s place) go to Barsana, which is the home of Radha Rani, a week before Holi, the women used to beat them with sticks. Men usually carry a shield to protect themselves from all kinds of blows. The celebration takes place in the sprawling complex of Radha Rani Temple in Barsana, which is said to be the only temple in the country dedicated to Radha.
Why is Lathmar Holi celebrated?
According to popular Hindu beliefs, the festival is said to be a recreation of the famous Hindu mythology, according to which, when Lord Krishna visited Radha’s city of Barsana, he used to tease Radha and her friends, who in turn resented . On moving ahead and throwing flowers at him, he was thrown out of Barsana.
