London: Millions of patients worldwide die every year from cancer. But now a new treatment has been discovered that can save the lives of cancer patients. Yuvan Thakkar, a teenager of Indian origin suffering from cancer, has become the first beneficiary of this treatment method in Britain. Yvonne says he is able to enjoy the things he loves after receiving treatment with the help of a fund set up by the UK government-funded National Health Service to make innovative treatments accessible to thousands of people.
According to NHS England, 16-year-old Thakkar, from Watford, near London, is the first teenager in the UK to receive advanced chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy (cART therapy), made possible by the Cancer Drug Fund (CDF). This treatment method is also called tisagenlecleucel (Kymria). The National Health Service (NHS) this weekend achieved the milestone of providing the latest and most innovative treatments to 100,000 patients with the help of the CDF. Undisclosed costs of such treatments are covered by this fund.
CART treatment changed life
Thakkar said, “Being treated with the CAR T method has changed my life a lot. Thakkar thanked London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) for the ‘incredible’ care he received. He said, “I remember many trips to the hospital and being out of school for long periods of time. He helped me get to the point where I am able to enjoy many of the things I love, Like playing snooker or pool, meeting friends and family and going on luxurious holidays. It is difficult to imagine how things would have been had treatment not been available.” Thakkar was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of six. (Language)
