New Delhi. Voting for the 18th Lok Sabha elections in India is starting from 19th April. Former cricketer Yusuf Pathan is also trying his luck in the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections. This is not the first time that a cricketer is trying to reach Parliament through Lok Sabha elections. Gautam Gambhir, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mohammad Azharuddin, Kirti Azad, Chetan Chauhan have reached Lok Sabha after winning the elections. Many cricketers like Mohammad Kaif, Manoj Prabhakar, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi have also lost the Lok Sabha elections. Now it remains to be seen whether the name of Yusuf Pathan, who has won the World Cup, gets registered among the cricketers who have won the elections or he faces disappointment.
‘Fielding’ did not work on the election field
Mohammad Kaif, one of the best fielders of India, also entered politics but his fielding did not work here. Mohammad Kaif joined Congress in 2014 and contested elections from Phulpur seat of Uttar Pradesh in the same year. Kaif, who was very popular as a cricketer, could not capitalize on his popularity in the elections and remained at fourth position with 58 thousand votes.

All-rounder lost to Sushma Swaraj
Manoj Prabhakar, India’s best all-rounder, after retiring from cricket, tried himself in the field of politics also. He contested the 1996 Lok Sabha elections from All India Indira Congress (Tiwari Congress). In front of him were BJP’s veteran Sushma Swaraj and Congress’s Kapil Sibal. Manoj Prabhakar, who played 39 test matches, had to face defeat in the elections. Sushma Swaraj had won this seat of South Delhi. Prabhakar remained at third position.
Shined in cricket, disappointed in politics
Sachin Tendulkar’s Balsakha and his time’s star cricketer Vinod Kambli also entered politics, but they could not prolong their innings here. Vinod Kambli, who played 17 Test and 104 ODI matches, tried himself in the Lok Sabha in 2009. He contested the elections on behalf of Lok Bharti Party, but the public rejected him.

Tiger Pataudi lost not once but twice
Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, one of the best captains of India, also tried himself in politics. But the love that Tiger Pataudi got on the cricket field was not in politics. Nawab Junior Pataudi, who tried himself in the election field in 1971 and 1975 on behalf of Vishal Haryana Party, had to face defeat both the times. Tiger Pataudi’s father Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi also played for the Indian team. Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi played 46 test matches for India between 1961 and 1975.
Azhar and Azad both won and lost
Mohammad Azharuddin and Kirti Azad are among those cricketers who both won and faced defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. Azhar, who was a Congress candidate, reached the Lok Sabha elections in 2009 by winning the Moradabad seat. But in 2014 he had to face defeat from Tonk-Sawai Madhopur seat. Similarly, Kirti Azad won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and had to face defeat in 2019. Kirti Azad’s father Bhagwat Jha Azad, who was a member of the team that won the World Cup in 1983, was the Chief Minister of Bihar.
