Caracas: Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner of the presidential election held on Sunday in Venezuela. However, opposition leaders are unhappy with the results and are preparing to protest. National Election Council chief Elvis Amoroso said that Maduro got 51 percent of the votes, while opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez got 44 percent of the votes. He said that these results are based on votes cast at 80 percent of the polling stations. The election authority has not yet released the official voting data of 30,000 polling stations, due to which the opposition is not able to confirm the results.

Maduro faces a tough challenge

Current President Nicolas Maduro had to face a tough challenge from the united opposition in this election. During the election campaign, the opposition had said that they will overcome the economic crisis that has been going on for the last decade. Due to the economic crisis in Venezuela, about 70 lakh people have left the country and settled in other countries. The opposition fought the election against Maduro under the leadership of 74-year-old Edmundo Gonzalez Urquiza. However, he could not defeat Maduro who has been in power for the last 11 years.

People were waiting for the results

Venezuelans were anxiously awaiting the results of Sunday’s presidential election, which could pave the way for the end of 25 years of one-party rule. President Nicolas Maduro faced a strong challenge from Gonzalez in his bid for a third term. Opposition leaders were confident of Gonzalez’s victory and began celebrating outside some polling stations. Voting was due to end at 6 p.m., but voting continued for about six hours after that at some polling stations in Caracas.
