Maha Shivratri 2022. According to the Hindu calendar, Mahashivratri festival is celebrated every year on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Falgun month. Although the date varies every year according to the Gregorian calendar as these festivals are scheduled according to the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. Before observing the fast, keep in mind whether you are completely healthy or not because fasting in case of poor health can also have a negative effect on health. If you are feeling well, get up early during Brahma Muhurta and after that wash your bath and wear clean clothes. After meditating for some time, take a resolution that you will follow the fast faithfully for the whole day. Also, maintain celibacy while observing the fast.
Do not consume these things during fasting
If you are fasting on Maha Shivratri, then the consumption of rice, wheat or pulses in any form is strictly prohibited during this time. Drink plenty of restraint on Mahashivratri. Eat fruits, milk and things according to the fast throughout the day. Use rock salt instead of common salt.
Remember and worship Lord Shiva
Lord Bholenath is specially worshiped on Maha Shivratri festival. On Mahashivratri, install a Shivalinga or an idol of Lord Shiva in the house, light a lamp of oil or ghee and anoint the Lord with pure water or Gangajal. While chanting Om Namah Shivaya, offer Ganga water, raw milk, flowers and fruits of datura, bel leaves etc. to Lord Shiva. The ardent devotee of Lord Shiva stays awake throughout the night and worships.
Purpose of fasting on Maha Shivratri
Actually the primary purposes of fasting are to give the much needed break to the body and mind from regular life. Fasting helps in getting rid of the toxins present in the body. Also, foods that provoke tamasic properties are avoided. By maintaining celibacy the followers practice self-restraint and self-restraint.
