Sangamner (Maharashtra). The Hanuman Rath Yatra to be held on Hanuman Jayanti every year in Ahilyanagar in Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra has become a unique symbol of female power.
Women draw this rath yatra, which is part of a historical tradition that has been going on since the British rule. The tradition began with the adventure event in 1929, when hundreds of women united and took out a rath yatra despite the British ban. Even today this event is celebrated with full devotion.
This rath yatra begins with a special ceremony, in which the flag of the police is installed on the chariot amidst the echo of the drums. Only then the journey starts formally. This tradition not only reflects religious enthusiasm, but also a symbol of social harmony.
The 1929 incident recorded in the pages of history is still a source of inspiration for the people. At that time, the British had banned the rath yatra and arrested many youths. On the morning of 23 April 1929, on the day of Hanuman Jayanti, the police surrounded the temple. Due to the pressure and protest of the British, the men retreated and returned to their homes. But in that difficult situation, women showed indomitable courage.
About 200 to 250 women united and took the chariot in their possession. As soon as this news spread, the number of women increased to 500. The police tried to intimidate them, argued and threatened arrest and trial. But women did not bother with their intentions. Courageous women and women like Jhumbarbai Avasak, Bankabai Pardeshi, Leela Pingale climbed on the chariot and installed the statue of Hanumanji and started pulling the chariot with the cheers of “Balbhim Hanuman Ki Jai”.
This incident created history and since then this tradition has been established. Today this rath yatra is celebrated as a celebration of female power, in which a large number of women and women participate enthusiastically. This event not only holds religious significance, but also presents an example of social empowerment and women’s courage. This tradition still units thousands of people every year and keeps the story of women’s courage and unity alive.
