Landslide in Wayanad

Heavy rains in Wayanad district of Kerala caused a massive landslide on Tuesday morning. 11 people have died after being buried under debris in several incidents of landslides. Large scale damage is expected in this incident. Landslides have occurred on Meppadi, Mubadakkai and Chooral Mala hills of Wayanad. According to officials, the first landslide occurred in Mubadakkai at around 1 am.

Officials said the next landslide occurred at Chooral Mala at 4 am. Rescue operations were underway there at that time. A school that served as a camp, a house, a school bus all reportedly got flooded and filled with mud and water. Kerala Health Minister Veena George said the death toll in the landslide rose to 11. Six bodies were brought to the Meppady Community Health Center and five to a private medical college.

400 families stranded due to bridge collapse

According to reports, about 400 families are stranded after a bridge collapsed in Chural Mala town. Many people are reported to be injured and many houses have been washed away. The damage assessment has not been done yet due to power outage in the entire area.

Government agencies engaged in rescue operation

The Kerala government has swung into action. Chief Minister P Vijayan said that all government agencies have been engaged in the rescue operation. It is being told that the situation may worsen. The government machinery has been engaged in rescue work since the incident came to light. Many ministers will reach Wayanad and lead the activities. Two teams of Kannur Defense Security Corps will soon reach the spot for rescue work. Two Air Force helicopters will take off from Sulur at 7:30 am.

Kerala Chief Minister’s Office informed that in view of rains including landslides in Wayanad district, the Health Department-National Health Mission has opened a control room. Numbers 9656938689 and 8086010833 have been issued for emergency assistance.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning for Malappuram and Kannur districts of Kerala during the next three hours. Heavy to very heavy rains have been warned at isolated places in Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram districts of Kerala during the next three hours.
