There is a fear of violence erupting once again in the country’s north-eastern state of Manipur. Here in Jiribam district, some militants attacked police posts and houses on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. Around 12:30 in the night, militants who came in 3-4 boats attacked the police post and set the houses on fire.
A police officer said that the Chotobekra post was burnt down around 12:30 pm. After this, Lamtai Khunou and Modhupur posts were attacked. According to the police, the militants attacked several villages and set houses on fire. Videos of these incidents have also surfaced.
More than 200 people are in relief camps.
In Jiribam district of Manipur, a person was allegedly killed by militants. Due to this, violence has erupted again in the state. More than 200 people of the Meitei community have been sent to new relief camps. Suspected militants had burnt many houses in the outskirt villages of Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal and Begra of Jiribam district. People of these villages were living in the relief camp set up in the Jiri sports complex.
Tension after murder of 59-year-old man
An official said most of the people sent to the new camps were living in villages located about 30 km from Jiribam town. “More security personnel have been sent to the area,” he said. The Manipur police has ordered the state police commandos to immediately move to Jiribam. Police said tension had prevailed in ethnic strife-torn Jiribam district of Manipur after the killing of a 59-year-old man of a community on Thursday evening. A police official said the victim had gone to his farm on Thursday morning from where he went missing. His body was later recovered.
Thousands of people left homeless due to violence
After the killing, the locals protested outside the Jiribam police station and demanded that the licensed weapons taken from them in view of the elections be returned to them. Jiribam has so far remained unaffected by the violence that has been going on in Manipur since May last year. Meitei, Muslim, Naga, Kuki and non-Manipuri people also live here. More than 200 people have died and thousands have become homeless in the ethnic violence that has been going on since May last year between the Meitei people living in the Imphal valley and the Kuki people living in the hilly areas.
