Manipur Elections 2022 Voting: In the first phase of assembly elections in Manipur, 38 out of 60 seats are being voted. The fate of 173 candidates, including 15 women, will be decided in the EVMs in this phase of polling, which begins at 7 am. According to Election Commission officials, contingents of Central Armed Police Force personnel have been deployed in all 38 assembly constituencies. 9,895 polling personnel are conducting the elections at the designated 1,721 polling stations. In the first phase, 12,22,713 voters including 6,29,276 women voters will decide the fate of 173 candidates, including 15 women. In this phase, the prestige of Chief Minister and BJP candidate N Biren Singh, his cabinet colleague Thongam Vishwajit Singh, NPP candidate and Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Jaikumar Singh, senior BJP leaders Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, Congress’s Ratankumar Singh and Lokeshwar Singh are at stake.
JD(U) candidate shot
Wahangbam Rojit Singh, a Janata Dal (United) candidate contesting from the Kshetrigaon assembly constituency in Manipur, was shot dead by two unidentified bike-borne miscreants late on Saturday night. Police said on Sunday that Rojit was shot when he was returning home after election related activities with his party men. He has been admitted to a private hospital after being shot. At present, his condition is said to be stable. Security forces have launched a search operation in Imphal East district to nab unidentified criminals. In another incident, two people, including a child, were killed and five others were injured in a bomb blast at a house in Gangpimual village of Churchandpur district on Saturday night. Both the incidents happened less than 48 hours after polling in five districts.
