The manuscript of ‘Ramcharitmanas’ written by Goswami Tulsidas has been included in the ‘Memory of the World list’. A total of three manuscripts including ‘Ramcharitmanas’ have been included in the world list.
This decision was taken in the 10th meeting of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP). At the meeting, three nominations from India were included in UNESCO’s ‘Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register’.
38 representatives and 40 observers from the United Nations participated in the MOWCAP meeting held in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. In this meeting, Dean of Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts – IGNCA and Head of the Department of Art Fund Division, Prof. Ramesh Chandra Gaur presented three entries from India’s side. These included the manuscript of Sahridayalok-Lochan (an important text of Indian poetics), the manuscript of Panchatantra and the illustrated manuscript of Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas.
After detailed discussion and recommendations by the Register Sub-Committee and voting by the representatives of the Member States, all three nominations were successfully incorporated. ‘Ramcharitmanas’, ‘Panchantra’ and ‘Sahridayalok-Lochan’ are such classic works, which have deeply influenced Indian literature and culture, and have shaped the moral fabric and artistic expressions of the nation. These literary works transcend time and space and have left an indelible mark on generations of readers and artists in India and beyond.
