International Court of Justice
The Hague: Israel will now respond to genocide charges in court on Friday after South Africa appealed to the UN’s top court for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. South Africa had filed a petition in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in December accusing Israel of genocide, after which on Thursday the court heard for the third time the ongoing conflict in Gaza. South Africa told the court that the situation in Gaza had reached a new and catastrophic stage.
Israel to withdraw unconditionally from Gaza Strip
South Africa appealed to the 15-judge bench for immediate action. South Africa’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Vusimuzi Madonsela, has appealed to the bench of judges to order Israel to completely and unconditionally withdraw from the Gaza Strip. South Africa has made four requests to the ICJ to investigate Israel. According to the latest request, South Africa says Israel’s military incursion into Rafah threatens the survival of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Israel rejected the allegations
Let us tell you that, during the hearing earlier this year, Israel had completely rejected the allegations of genocide in Gaza. Israel had said that it makes every effort to ensure that no harm is caused to civilians and that it is only targeting Hamas terrorists. In January, the judges had ordered Israel to make every possible effort to prevent any incidents of death, destruction and genocide in Gaza, but the bench did not order a halt to the military offensive.
