Sivakasi. Seven workers, including five women, were killed, while three others were injured in an explosion at a firecracker factory in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu on Thursday. The incident took place in the city of Sivakasi, famous as the firecracker hub of India. A fire broke out in a private firecracker factory located at Sengamalapatti near Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district. Police and fire service personnel reached the spot to start the rescue operation and shifted the injured to the government hospital. According to a senior police officer, the condition of one of the injured is said to be critical. The cause of the fire has not been known yet.
Media reports suggest that about 10 employees were present in the firecracker factory at the time of the explosion. It is noteworthy that in February, 10 people including four women were killed in an explosion in a firecracker factory in Virudhunagar district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had then expressed grief over these deaths. It was announced that an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh would be given to the families of each deceased from PMNRF.
