Haveri (Karnataka). The last rites of Naveen Shekharappa Gyangudar, an Indian medical student killed in Russian firing in Ukraine’s Kharkiv city, were performed in his native village Chalgeri here on Monday morning. Naveen’s body will be donated to the medical college. Naveen’s last rites were performed according to the Veerashaiva Lingayat tradition. Naveen’s body will be kept for the last darshan till 2 pm and after that it will be given to the private medical college.
People from nearby villages reached the spot. Many medical students who returned from Ukraine also reached Naveen’s native village to have his last glimpse.
Praveen, a medical student who returned safely from Ukraine, told that he studied in the same college in Ukraine where Naveen was studying. Naveen was his senior.
Praveen told that Naveen was very good in studies and was a rank holder. He had helped many people from India to Ukraine stay there. Praveen was in Naveen’s room before the war started.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had arrived at 3 am to collect Naveen’s body. Naveen’s body has been brought to India via Dubai. There is also a possibility of him going to Naveen’s village.
Naveen’s mother Vijayalakshmi told that her son was very helpful and he had gone out to fetch food for his friends, where he was killed. Had he lived in the bunker, he would have been alive.
Naveen’s family has donated Naveen’s body to the medical college.
Significantly, on March 1, Naveen died in Ukraine. The government has assured a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to Naveen’s family and to help his brother.
The Prime Minister himself had spoken to Naveen’s father and consoled him.
