New Delhi. The Punjab National Bank scam accused Mehul Choksi has been arrested in Belgium. According to the report, the arrest was made on Saturday at the request of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal says that his client extradition will not be easy.
Aggarwal said, “An appeal will be filed for him. If a person is happy with the treatment there, then he should get treatment there. Wife, lawyer and doctor should have an option of their choice. People send their children abroad for education, then you will ask why they do not take education in India?
Choksi’s lawyer said, “If they (Choksi) come here, due to political and media pressure, they believe that fair hearing may not be possible.” He said that we will defend our client like a rock.
Heera merchant Mehul Choksi went to Belgium for medical treatment after which he was there. He had been living in Antigua since 2018 after leaving India.
Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are accused of embezzlement of about Rs 13,500 crore from the government bank Punjab National Bank. Apart from Nirav Modi, his wife Amy, his brother Nishal are also accused in this case.
65 -year -old Choksi is living with his wife Preeti Choksi after receiving the ‘residence card’ in Antwerp, Belgium.
Choksi’s wife is a citizen of Belgium. With the help of his wife, Choksi acquired a visa to stay in Belgium on 15 November 2023.
