South Korea and America start Military Drills
Seoul: US and South Korean troops on Monday began extensive military drills aimed at bolstering their shared defence capabilities against nuclear-armed North Korea, prompting North Korea to once again accuse the two allies of conducting rehearsals in preparation for an attack. The annual summer drills come amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula. The US-South Korea have stepped up joint military drills in a tit-for-tat response to North Korea’s weapons display.
What did America and South Korea say
The drills began hours after North Korea’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement reiterating that such exercises are “drills that provoke aggression.” The United States and South Korea have described their joint exercises as defensive in nature and the two countries have expanded and upgraded their training in recent years to deal with emerging threats from North Korea.
Military exercise will continue till 29 August
The US and South Korean forces did not immediately react to the North Korean Foreign Ministry’s statement. The ‘Ulchi Freedom Shield Exercise’ will run till August 29 and will be an 11-day long exercise. Under this, more than 40 types of exercises will be conducted, including ‘computer-simulated war games’ and ‘live-fire’ exercises. About 19 thousand South Korean military personnel will take part in this exercise, but the US has not confirmed the number of its soldiers participating in the exercise.
The alliance between America and South Korea has increased
It should also be noted here that earlier, the US and South Korea had signed a joint nuclear deterrence guideline. In view of the growing nuclear threat from North Korea, it was described as an important and fundamental step to further strengthen deterrence. US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yun Suk Yeol described it as ‘tremendous progress’. It is also important to know here that South Korea does not have any nuclear weapons. (AP)
