Let us know about the political journey of Sushma Swaraj-

  1. In 1980, Sushma Swaraj joined the BJP and was appointed the party’s secretary. She held the post of All India Secretary of the party for two years and played an important role in strengthening the party. In 1990, Swaraj was elected a member of the Rajya Sabha. After this, in 1996, she was made the Minister of Information and Broadcasting during the 13-day BJP government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This was the second term of Sushma Swaraj, who has been a seven-time MP, as a Lok Sabha member.
  2. When the BJP came to power under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1998, she once again became the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. Meanwhile, she was elected as the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi for a short period in 1998. During her short tenure of about three months, she was heavily criticized for the rising price of onions.
  3. In the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, Swaraj contested from Bellary in Karnataka against then Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Though she lost, her stature grew. In the third term of the Vajpayee government from 2003 to May 2004, she served as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare as well as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.
  4. When the UPA came to power in 2004, Sonia Gandhi’s name was being considered for the post of Prime Minister, which Sushma Swaraj strongly opposed. She vowed that if Sonia Gandhi took the oath, she would shave her head and live her entire life like a beggar. She believed that if a foreigner would lead the country after independence, it would be an insult to the rich democratic tradition. However, Sushma Swaraj did not have to do anything like this, because Dr. Manmohan Singh was chosen as the Prime Minister in place of Sonia Gandhi.
  5. She was considered close to BJP stalwart LK Advani. Swaraj made history once again when she became the first woman leader of the opposition in 2009, replacing her mentor LK Advani. She held this position till 2014. After the formation of the first Modi government in 2014, she was given charge of the Ministry of External Affairs. Swaraj, who was elected as a Member of Parliament seven times, was the second woman foreign minister of India after Indira Gandhi.
  6. As foreign minister, in 2015, a fierce war broke out between the Saudi coalition forces and the Houthi rebels in Yemen. During that time, Operation Rahat was launched and 5,000 Indians were brought back to their homeland. Similarly, Operation Sankatmochak is still on everyone’s lips. In 2016, it was launched for Indians trapped in the war in South Sudan and under this, about 500 people were brought to India. These are some examples that show how concerned Swaraj was about the people of her country trapped abroad.
  7. During her tenure as Foreign Minister, she set an example of human behaviour by managing India’s diplomacy well. During her tenure of five years, she was always seen standing with the common Indians through Twitter. India gained strength at the diplomatic level.
