It was a very sad day for Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu at the Paris Games as she missed out on a medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting competition on Wednesday. Chanu finished fourth in the final. The reason behind Chanu’s defeat, who carried millions of hopes, is periods because after the final, the Manipuri weightlifter revealed that she felt weak on stage. She told that it was the third day of her menstruation.
Weakness and pain during periods is nothing new. Most girls face this every month. However, for some girls who are physically involved in one format for a long time, this can also be normal.
Dr. Surabhi Singh, founder of Sacchi Saheli organisation and gynecologist, who is spreading awareness among women and all sections of society about the taboo of periods, says that periods are a personal experience. No one can decide this from outside. Periods are completely normal for some people, while others may experience more pain or have other problems.

This is the biggest enemy of your brain, it tears nerves in the blink of an eye, dozens of patients are coming daily
Dr. Surabhi says, but for women who exercise a lot and have been doing it for a long time, it becomes a little easier for them to do physical activities even during periods. But this does not mean that once it becomes easy, periods will always be normal and there will be no problem. Sometimes hormonal stress emerges as a big factor. Due to this, the date of periods changes. The cycle and flow of periods change.
Dr. Singh says that there is no single rule regarding periods. It is very unique and individual based. If someone has period discomfort, it can be known from his/her past history.
How correct is it to lift weights during periods?
Usually in Indian homes, elderly women advise to not lift any kind of weight during periods. They say that it has a bad effect on the body, but Mirabai Chanu had to lift weights in the Olympics. In such a situation, how correct is this?
Periods affect the uterus
On this, Dr. Surabhi explains that the blood flow in the uterus increases during periods. Just like after eating food, the blood flow in the stomach increases, so after eating food, one is not allowed to run, the same thing happens during periods as well. Here the uterus is more active. In such a situation, lifting weights puts pressure on the nerves of the stomach along with the uterus, which sometimes causes pain.
Stress is also a big reason
Apart from this, stress is also a big reason. Stress of any kind, whether it is of playing in the Olympics or of periods, has an impact. On the other hand, girls who have been practicing sports or physical activities for 12-14 years, they also know that if periods come, they can get stuck in this situation. Or they can also bear that situation on the basis of their practice.
Possible in Mirabai’s case too
Dr. Surabhi says that this problem of periods can also happen in Mirabai’s case. Because when Mirabai Chanu is going through the hormonal changes of periods and is participating in the Olympics, her bill power may be strong, she may also have stamina, but at the same time she is competing with competitors from other countries who either do not have this problem, or their periods are normal, or their stamina is more than her in this situation. It is normal for this to happen.
