Arson in Bangladesh
After Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of PM in Bangladesh, violence has increased in the entire country. The rioters attacked the police, the houses of councillors and MPs of Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League and set them on fire. The rioters have also attacked at least six police stations in Chittagong city. They looted weapons, bullets and many other items from inside the police stations.
Excited crowds took to the streets in celebration
After the news of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, agitated crowds took to the streets to celebrate. Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) said that police stations in Chandgaon, Patenga, EPZ, Kotawali, Akbar Shah and Paharli were attacked. The stations were vandalised and then set on fire. The attackers also tried to break the main gate of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Lines in Dampara.
Bricks and stones pelted on police
The policemen present there fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the attackers. After this, hundreds of people gathered in front of the main gate of Dampara Police Lines and started attacking and trying to force their way in. The agitated crowd started pelting stones and bricks at the Police Commissioner’s Office.
The rioters also attacked the Central Jail
In another incident, the Chittagong Central Jail in Laldighi area was also attacked. The jail guards opened fire from inside to disperse the rioters. The Chittagong District Police Lines in the Chotopul area of Halishahar was also targeted at around 5 pm.
Attack on Awami League councillors and MPs
The house of CCC Ward No. 10 councillor Nichar Uddin Manju was attacked. The councillor went to the roof of his house and apologised to the attackers. The attackers then vandalised his residence and left. The office of city Awami League vice-president Altaf Hossain Bacchu was also vandalised and a party office at Darul Fazal Market off Newmarket square was also set on fire. The rioters then set fire to the residence of Raojan MP ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury at Patharghata.
