New Delhi: The Modi government will bring back the bodies of Indians killed in the Kuwait fire tragedy. The Indian Air Force has been entrusted with the responsibility for this. Currently, Kuwaiti officials are conducting DNA tests of the bodies of more than 40 Indians killed in a massive fire in a building in the Mangaf area and an Indian Air Force plane has been kept ready to bring back the bodies. Officials gave this information on Thursday. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh has reached Kuwait to monitor the assistance to the Indians injured in the fire and to bring back the bodies of those killed soon.
A total of 49 people were killed in the fire at the Al-Mangaf building, and 42 of them are believed to be Indians, officials said. Hours after arriving in Kuwait, Singh met Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya. The Indian Embassy in Kuwait said Al-Yahya assured full assistance, including medical care, early repatriation of bodies and investigation of the incident. “Foreign Minister Yahya expressed condolences over the tragic incident. The embassy said, “The Minister of State appreciated the cooperation being extended by all the concerned authorities in Kuwait.” Al-Yahya on Thursday assured full assistance to the Indians affected by the massive fire in an apartment housing foreign workers and expressed commitment to investigate the tragedy soon. Singh also visited Mubarak Al Kabir Hospital where seven injured Indians are admitted. Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement on Wednesday night saying, “About 40 of the people killed in an unfortunate and tragic incident of fire in a residential building in Mangaf area of Kuwait early today (Wednesday) are believed to be Indians.
PM Modi called the incident sad
Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the incident as ‘tragic’ and reviewed the situation by holding a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary PK Mishra among others. After the meeting, Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased Indians from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and directed that the government provide all possible assistance. The Foreign Minister spoke to his Kuwaiti counterpart Al-Yahya over the phone and requested him to send the bodies of the Indians who lost their lives due to the fire to India at the earliest. Urged to send the bodies of those who lost their lives in the accident to their country as soon as possible. (Language)
