Bari (Italy): The talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni have taken the India-Italy strategic partnership to new heights. In the last few years, Italy has emerged as a strong partner of India. Now the relationship between India and Italy is moving towards a new height. This is a new chapter in the relations between the two countries. During the G7 summit, PM Modi reviewed the progress of bilateral strategic partnership between the two countries with his counterpart Meloni. Along with this, they agreed to strengthen cooperation in global forums and multilateral proposals, including the India-West Asia-Europe Economic Corridor.
It is believed that with Italy’s strong support to India, India’s influence in the India-Europe Economic Corridor will increase further in the coming days. PM Modi met Meloni on Friday at the end of his one-day visit to Apulia in southern Italy. During this, Modi thanked the Italian Prime Minister for inviting him to the G7 summit. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a release issued about the meeting that the leaders expressed commitment to fulfill their shared vision for an open and free Indo-Pacific region and also discussed the India-West Asia-Europe Economic Corridor.
Italy will support India against China
Amid China’s aggressive activities in the region, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “Both the leaders look forward to joint activities to be implemented under the prepared framework to fulfill their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.” It said that they also discussed important regional and global issues and agreed to strengthen cooperation in global forums and multilateral proposals, including the India-West Asia-Europe Economic Corridor. The India-West Asia-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) project envisages a huge road, rail and shipping system between Saudi Arabia, India, America and Europe. To ensure connectivity between Asia, West Asia and the West.
India-Italy strategic partnership will also be strengthened
IMEC was finalised during the G20 summit in Delhi last year. It said, “The two leaders expressed satisfaction at the regular political dialogue and reviewed the progress of the India-Italy strategic partnership. Expressing happiness at the growing trade and economic cooperation, they called for expanding commercial ties in clean energy, manufacturing, space, science and technology, telecommunications, artificial intelligence and critical minerals.” The release said, “In this context, they welcomed the recent MoU on Industrial Property Rights (IPR). This right provides a framework for cooperation on patents, designs and trademarks.” The Ministry of External Affairs said that the two sides discussed bilateral defence and security cooperation and expressed hope to further enhance defence-industrial cooperation.
Italy’s warship will visit India
The leaders welcomed the visit of Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour and training ship ITS Vespucci to India later this year. Prime Minister Modi thanked the Italian government for recognising the contribution of the Indian Army in the Italian campaign during World War II and said that India will upgrade the Yashwant Ghadge Memorial in Montone, Italy. Noting coordination under the ‘Global Biofuel Alliance’, the leaders welcomed the signing of the Letter of Intent for Cooperation in Energy Transition which will promote bilateral cooperation in clean and green energy, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
He expressed happiness over the new program of cooperation for 2025-27 to promote joint research and development in science and technology. Earlier on Friday, Meloni welcomed Prime Minister Modi. Along with this, the leaders of Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, India, Jordan, Kenya, Mauritania, Tunisia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) addressed the session on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa and the Mediterranean along with Pope Francis.
