Bhubaneswar. A strange case has come to light in Odisha. A man, claiming to be a policeman, married not once or twice but five times. The man married these women without legally divorcing. The fraud was exposed after a complaint was lodged with the police. It is alleged that the accused also extorted a lot of money from the women. The women were defrauded through online matrimonial websites. During police interrogation, the accused told that he had also proposed to 49 other girls for marriage. Now the truth has come out.
A police officer said on Saturday that a 34-year-old man has been arrested for marrying five women without divorcing anyone and duping them of lakhs of rupees by posing as a police officer. During the investigation, it was also revealed that the accused was chatting with 49 other women on marriage proposals through a matrimonial website. Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner Sanjib Panda said that after receiving separate complaints from two women, the police laid a trap through a woman officer and arrested Satyajit Samal. Accused Satyajit had married both these women. Police have recovered a car, a motorcycle, Rs 2.10 lakh in cash, a pistol, some ammunition and two marriage registration certificates from his possession.

The fifth wife is not known
Police Commissioner Panda further said that during interrogation, the man admitted that he had married two women whose names were in the agreement document. Out of his total five wives, two were from Odisha and one each from Kolkata and Delhi. The fifth wife is yet to be traced. Panda said that three bank accounts of Samal have been frozen. The accused is originally from Jajpur district of Odisha, but is currently living in Bhubaneswar. He used to target widows and divorced women through matrimonial sites.
Chat with 49 women
Police said that Satyajit Samal used to demand cash and car from women after promising marriage. He also threatened them if they asked for their money back. On checking his mobile phone, police found that he was chatting with 49 women on a matrimonial site. Investigation against Samal was started after a woman lodged a complaint at the Capital Police Station here in February.
Victim’s story
According to one of the two complainants, she came in contact with Samal through a matrimonial site. They started chatting and meeting regularly. Later, Samal allegedly forced her to have physical relations on the pretext of marriage and demanded money to buy a car. The victim took a personal loan from the bank and bought a car worth around Rs 8.15 lakh for him. He also gave her Rs 36 lakh to start a business. From another woman, he had allegedly taken Rs 8.60 lakh and a motorcycle. Panda said the accused lived a luxurious lifestyle with the money he defrauded. He said, “We hope that after his arrest, more women will come forward, whom he might have cheated.” The police officer said that he used to flee to Dubai after cheating a woman and return after finding his next target.
