Male: After the tension between India and Maldives, Male has now become more dependent on Beijing. So now China is providing water to Maldives. Recently China has handed over a consignment of 1,500 tonnes of water to the Maldives, the second such contribution in less than two months, sourced from Tibetan glaciers, a media report said on Friday. This is the latest consignment of several grants and aid that China has promised the Maldives, especially since pro-China Mohammed Muizzu takes over as president in November 2023.
China’s Xizang Autonomous Region donated 1,500 tonnes of potable water to the Maldives government on Thursday, news portal Sun.mv reported. According to the report, the Foreign Ministry said that the donated water will be distributed to citizens for use during drinking water shortages. Earlier on March 27, the Maldives government had announced that it had received a similar consignment of 1,500 tonnes of water from China.
Maldives called China a good friend
Chinese Ambassador to Maldives Wang Lixin handed over the consignment to Foreign Minister Musa Jameel at a ceremony here. Speaking on the occasion, Jameel said China is a “good friend of Maldives”, and an important ally especially during challenging times and crises. In December 2014, Maldives was going through its worst water crisis after a massive fire broke out at the Male Water and Sewerage Company complex and during this time India had provided water to Maldives by running ‘Operation Neer’ on December 4, 2014.
