The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has spent a total of Rs 796 crore on the maintenance and repair of 101 airports in the financial year 2023-24. You will be surprised to know that this amount is 20 percent more than the previous financial year (2022-23). This information has come to light from official figures. The expenditure incurred by AAI for the maintenance and repair of airports has been increasing steadily since the financial year 2021-22.
Rs 663.42 crore was spent in the financial year 2022-23
A total of Rs 795.72 crore was spent on the maintenance and repair of 101 airports in the last financial year ending March 2024, while this expenditure was Rs 663.42 crore in the financial year 2022-23. According to the data shared by the Ministry of Civil Aviation with the Rajya Sabha, the expenditure on repair and maintenance works in the financial year 2021-22 was Rs 535.02 crore.
No expenses were made on 20 airports
According to the data, expenditure figures have been provided for 121 AAI airports. Out of these, no such expenditure has been made at 20 airports. After the incident of a part of the roof falling at Terminal 2 of Delhi Airport on June 28 last, concerns have arisen about the maintenance of airport buildings.
After the accident, the ministry issued instructions for airport operators
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on July 29 that all airport operators have been directed to conduct a third-party audit of the structural stability of airport buildings and related infrastructure. He said, “All airport operators have been asked to conduct an audit of all civil, electrical and technical aspects of the airport building before the onset of monsoon every year.”
