Mozambique Boat Accident: A boat met with an accident on Sunday off the northern coast of Mozambique. More than 90 people, including children, died when the boat capsized. Information about this has been given by the local media. The boat was carrying more people than its capacity, local online broadcaster TV Diario Nampula reported. There were 130 people on board the boat and many of those who drowned were children. The report said the boat was heading from Lunga in Nampula province in the north of the country to Mozambique Island when the accident occurred. It is being told that many people are still missing. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
Boats were used for fishing
Some were traveling to attend a fair, while others were “trying to cross from Lunga to the island of Mozambique to avoid cholera infection,” TV Diario Nampula reported. News reports quoted Nampula province state secretary Jaime Neto as saying that misinformation about an alleged cholera outbreak caused people to panic and board boats in an attempt to escape. This boat was generally used for fishing.
Road network is bad
Mozambique and its neighboring southern African countries Zimbabwe and Malawi have been affected by cholera outbreaks in recent months. Many places in Mozambique can only be reached by boats. These boats often carry more people than their capacity, which leads to accidents. The situation is that the road network in the country is poor and some areas cannot be reached by land or air. (AP)
