Muhammad Yunus, head of the interim government in Bangladesh.
Dhaka: After the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, the head of the interim government and Nobel Prize-winning economist Mohammad Yunus has issued a big statement about the safety of the people of his country. He said that the government will ensure the safety of the people. Yunus also urged the youth to help in the reconstruction of Bangladesh. Yunus (84), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2006 for his excellent work in the matter of small loans, was appointed the head of the interim government on Tuesday after President Mohammad Shahabuddin dissolved the Parliament. He is taking oath today.
Earlier, amid widespread demonstrations, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and left the country. Yunus, who went to Paris for the Olympic Games, has returned home via Dubai. The Emirates flight (EK-582) carrying Yunus landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 2:10 pm local time. Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman, senior officials, student leaders and members of civil society welcomed him at the airport. At a press conference at the airport, Yunus expressed gratitude to the youth who made the movement against Hasina successful. He said, “We have got independence for the second time.
Yunus said we have to protect freedom
Yunus told the youth that we have to protect this freedom.” Yunus, who is set to take oath as chief adviser, a post equivalent to the post of prime minister, said his first task would be to restore law and order by controlling anarchic activities and attacks on minority communities. He described these incidents as “part of a conspiracy”. He urged people from all sections to listen to him and agreed to take charge of the interim government on the demand of students and youth. He said, “We have to form such a government which assures security to its citizens.” He asked the citizens to save the country from the chaos created during the protests.
It is our responsibility that no one is attacked in the country
Yunus said, “If you trust me, then you should ensure that there is no attack on anyone anywhere in the country. This is our first responsibility.” He said, “If I cannot do this and you do not listen to me, then I have no use here.” Yunus said that the country is now in the hands of the youth. He said, “The country is now in your hands. Now you have to rebuild it according to your aspirations. You have to use your creativity to build the country. You have achieved independence for the country.” He also paid tribute to Abu Saeed, who was one of the first people killed in police firing during the anti-discrimination student movement. (Language)
