Cape Town: The death toll in the collapse of a multi-storey building under construction in a coastal city of South Africa rose to five on Tuesday. After the accident, 49 workers are still trapped under the debris. Giving information, officials said that rescue workers have been engaged in search and rescue work for more than 12 hours. So far, 21 workers have been rescued from the debris, out of which about 11 workers are seriously injured.
Relief and rescue work is going on
According to officials, the death toll reached five on Tuesday and 49 workers are still buried under the debris. Officials said that this five-storey building under construction collapsed on Monday afternoon in George city, about 400 kilometers from Cape Town, South Africa. According to him, more than 100 personnel of emergency and other related departments are engaged in search and rescue work at the incident site. The help of search dogs is also being taken in relief and rescue work.
Workers’ families are worried
It is believed that some workers have died after being buried under the debris. Big cranes and other heavy machines have been deployed to remove the debris. According to George Municipal Corporation, 75 workers were working there when the building collapsed. The families and friends of the workers have gathered around the corporation’s office. Acting Mayor Leon Van Wyck said, “Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the bereaved and to all the affected families who are waiting for information about their loved ones.” (AP)
