(Samy Magdy) Mina (Saudi Arabia): Millions of pilgrims in Saudi Arabia on Sunday performed the symbolic stoning of the devil in large numbers, a ritual that marks the start of Eid al-Adha celebrations for Muslims around the world in the final days of the Hajj pilgrimage. The stoning of the devil is one of the five pillars of Islam and the culminating rites of the Hajj. It took place a day after more than 1.8 million pilgrims gathered at the Mount Arafat outside the holy city of Mecca to complete the annual five-day Hajj rites.
The pilgrims left Mount Arafat on Saturday evening and spent the night at a nearby site called Muzdalifah, where they collected pebbles that they used to symbolically stone the Devil Pillars, located at a sacred site in Mecca called Mina. Muslims believe it was here that Ibrahim’s faith was tested and he was ordered by God to sacrifice his only son, Ishmael.
This is the recognition
Ibrahim was ready to follow the order, but then God stopped his hand. The pilgrims will spend the next three days in Mina. From there, they will travel a long distance on pedestrian roads to a multi-storey complex where the relevant huge pillars are present. Pilgrims here throw seven pebbles on three pillars, which is believed to symbolize driving away evil and sin. After reaching Mecca from Mina, the pilgrims will perform “Tawaf” (circumambulation).
