Name Plate Controversy: 'Name Plate Controversy' reaches Supreme Court, NGO filed petition against Yogi government's order, hearing will be held tomorrow

New Delhi. The Uttar Pradesh government’s recent directive asking shop owners to write their names and mobile numbers on Kanwar Yatra routes has stirred political and religious controversy. The matter has now reached the Supreme Court, where the NGO Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) has filed a petition to overturn the government order. The petition was filed online at 6 am on July 20, and the Supreme Court Registry has listed the matter for hearing. A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti will hear APCR’s plea on July 22. The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has ordered that eateries, dhabas, fruit shops and tea stalls located on Kanwar Yatra routes be required to install nameplates with the owner’s details. The decision has heated up political discussions in the state and across the country, with the opposition terming the directive communal and accusing the BJP of indulging in divisive politics.

Regarding this issue, the Bharatiya Janata Party says that Hindus have the same right to maintain the purity of their faith like people of other religions. For information, let us tell you that initially, this directive was issued by the Muzaffarnagar Police for shops and eateries on the Kanwar Yatra routes of the district. After opposition from the opposition, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath implemented this order across the state. Also, the state government announced that action would be taken against those selling products with Halal certification.

The Kanwar Yatra, which takes place in the month of Sawan, is scheduled to begin from July 22. The Kanwar Yatra has four main routes in the state, starting from Haridwar in Uttarakhand and passing through districts of western Uttar Pradesh. A major route starts from Haridwar and passes through these districts. In eastern Uttar Pradesh, the Kanwar Yatra also starts from Varanasi, ending at Deoghar in Jharkhand. Another important route passes through Barabanki and Gonda in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Prominent yoga guru Baba Ramdev gave his opinion on the issue, saying, “If Ramdev has no problem in revealing his identity, why should Rehman? Everyone is proud of their name. There is no need to hide it; the sanctity of work is what matters.” Meanwhile, parties of the INDIA alliance have condemned the move, calling it state-sponsored militancy aimed at targeting Muslim shopkeepers.
