Nestle India claims to have reduced sugar in baby food products in India by more than 30 per cent in the last 5 years. The company, which makes products like Nescafe, Cerelac and Maggi, gave this clarification amid reports that it was selling products containing more sugar in less developed countries. According to findings by Swiss NGO Public Eye and the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), Nestlé sold more sugar-laden baby products in less developed South Asian countries, including India, African and Latin American countries, than in its markets in Europe.

When asked about this, a company spokesperson said, “Reducing sugar is a priority for Nestle India. Over the last five years, we have reduced sugar by up to 30 per cent depending on the product.” The spokesperson said, ”We regularly review our products and ensure that our products are refined without compromising on nutrition, quality, safety and taste. We keep improving our products to reduce sugar levels.” Nestle India claimed that its “infant cereal products are formulated to ensure the nutritional requirements of children like protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, iron etc. It is done for.
More sugar was found in Cerelac
“We have never and will never compromise on the nutritional quality of our products,” the spokesperson said. We continuously draw on our extensive global R&D network to enhance the nutritional value of our products.” The IBFAN report studied nearly 150 different baby products sold in different countries. According to the report, Nestle’s wheat-based product ‘Cerelac’ for babies aged six months is sold without any added sugar in the UK and Germany, but the 15 Cerelac products analyzed from India had an average of 2.7 grams of sugar in a single serving. . The report said that the amount of sugar was stated on the packaging in India.
Highest amount of sugar in Thai products
The highest amount of sugar in the product was found in Thailand at six grams. In the Philippines, five out of eight samples were found to have sugar content of 7.3 grams and this information was not even declared on the packaging.
