Veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, who was dropped from the Indian team, will now play county cricket in England. The Sussexes have included him in the team in place of Travis Head, the left-handed batsman of Australia. The club announced this on Thursday (March 10). Pujara, who has played 95 Test matches for India, will feature in both first-class and List A matches for Sussex.
Pujara has previously played for Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire in the English County Championship. “Pujara has been added to the team after Travis Head terminated his contract. Head is soon going to be a father. The club has accepted his request. Pujara is expected to play for the first championship match of the season,” the club said in a statement. Will be with the team at least till the end of the National One Day Championship.”
The English county season will begin on April 7. Sussex will play their first match against Derbyshire from 14 April. The season continues in all formats till September. Pujara is not a part of India’s current Test squad against Sri Lanka. Their home team Saurashtra has not qualified for the knock-outs of the Ranji Trophy. Also, he has not been bought by any IPL team this time. So it will be completely empty. They can take advantage of this by playing in England.
The 34-year-old Pujara, who scored 6713 Test runs with 18 centuries in Tests, said, “I am excited to be part of the historic Sussex County Cricket Club for the upcoming season. I am honored to be associated with the club. I am with the team.” I look forward to joining.” The club has also welcomed Pujara.
On the other hand, Travis Head, who left the team, said, “I would like to emphasize that I am ready to support my wife Jessica while balancing the busy international schedule. This is important to me. I hope so.” Hope to get a chance to join the club again in future also. I wish everyone the best and thank you for the support.”
