Through this notice, a tax of Rs 1,745 crore has been demanded from the Congress for the assessment year 2014-15 to 2016-17. Including this amount, the Income Tax Department has so far demanded a total tax of Rs 3,567 crore from the Congress.

Tax exemption given to political parties ended
PTI quoted sources as saying that the latest notices of the Income Tax Department are related to 2014-15 (about Rs 663 crore), 2015-16 (about Rs 664 crore) and 2016-17 (about Rs 417 crore). Sources have said that the authorities have ended the tax exemption given to political parties and have imposed tax on the party.
Rs 135 crore already withdrawn – Congress
Congress had informed last Friday that it has received a notice from the Income Tax Department, in which it has been asked to pay about Rs 1,823 crore. The party had said that the authorities have already withdrawn Rs 135 crore from the party’s accounts towards tax demands related to previous years. Let us tell you that Congress has moved the court against the tax demand of Rs 135 crore and this matter is likely to be heard in the Supreme Court on Monday. (input language)
