New Zealand Plane Fire: A major plane accident has been averted in New Zealand. New Zealand’s fire brigade department said that a passenger plane was safely landed at a New Zealand airport on Monday after its engine stopped due to a fire.

The Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800 jet caught fire as it took off for Melbourne, Australia. The plane was diverted and landed in Invercargill, New Zealand.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift supervisor Lyn Crosson said fire brigade crews were already deployed when the plane arrived in Invercargill about 50 minutes after takeoff from Queenstown. Queenstown Airport spokeswoman Katherine Nind said the cause of the engine fire and the number of passengers on board were not immediately known.

Queenstown, with a population of 53,000, is a popular tourist destination on New Zealand’s South Island, renowned for skiing, adventure tourism and alpine vistas. Virgin Australia said in an emailed statement that the incident may have been caused by a “possible bird strike.”
