Newborn and infant mortality decreased in Uttar Pradesh, no change in the mortality rate of children below five years of age

According to the latest sample registration system (SRS) Report 2021 of the Central Government, newborn and infant mortality has been recorded in Uttar Pradesh. UP’s newborn mortality or NMR 2020 report stated 26 per 1,000 living births as compared to 28 stated 28. Overall, India reported the death of 19 newborns per 1,000 living births in 2021, which is less than 20 in 2020. The report stated that it was 19 in Bihar compared to 21 in 2020.

In the list of 9 big states, UP finished third in the case of NMR after Madhya Pradesh (30) and Chhattisgarh (28). A total of eight states reported a decline in NMR, while seven others showed no changes in 2020 and 2021 figures. However, Assam (four digits), Chhattisgarh (two), and Haryana and Punjab (one digit) saw an increase in their NMR. Kerala’s NMR was the lowest four.
