Qualification tournaments are going on in many events for the Olympic Games starting from July 26 in Paris, in which Indian boxer Nishant Dev has confirmed his place in the 71 kg category. Nishant also secured a quota for India for the Paris Olympics by reaching the semi-finals of the World Olympic Boxing Qualification Tournament being held in Bangkok, Thailand.
First male boxer to secure quota for Paris Olympics
Nishant Dev has become the first male boxer from India to secure his place for this mega event by securing his quota for the Paris Olympics. Nishant Dev, who had missed out on securing a quota for the Paris Olympics in the earlier qualifiers, this time secured a quota for himself by defeating Moldova’s Vasil Cebotari 5-0 in the quarter-finals of the qualification tournament. This is the fourth boxing player from India to secure his place in the Paris Olympics. Earlier, Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 75 kg), Nikhat Zareen (women’s 50 kg) and Preeti Pawar (women’s 54 kg) had secured quotas for themselves by performing brilliantly in the Asian Games last year.
All eyes are now on Amit Panghal
India still has a chance to get two more quotas in boxing for the Paris Olympics, in which Arundhati Chaudhary in the women’s 66 kg category and Amit Panghal in the men’s 51 kg category will play their matches in the second qualifiers, which will definitely be the focus of all eyes. In the 60 kg category, Ankushita Boro had to face defeat 2-3 from a player from Sweden and she missed out on getting the Olympic quota.
