Odisha new excise policy : The BJP government in Odisha has decided not to open any new liquor shop in the state in the current financial year. Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan gave this information on Thursday. Harichandan told media persons, “To further streamline the existing excise policy, we have decided that no new liquor shop will be opened in the state this financial year.” He said that the sale of illicit liquor is a big challenge for the government. He said that some changes have been made in the excise policy, which will be applicable for the next eight months.
New excise policy will come
Harichandan said the state government will bring a new excise policy to completely curb the sale of illicit liquor. After mineral resources, liquor sales are the major source of revenue for the Odisha government. Excise revenue is set to increase manifold from Rs 1,780.29 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 6,455.06 crore by 2022-23.
Old policy extended by 1 month
After the BJP government came to power in the state, the excise policy of the previous BJD government was extended by 1 month. The BJD government had implemented the excise policy from April to July for the financial year 2024-25. Now many changes can be made in the new excise policy. The government wants to reduce its dependence on excise duty for revenue collection.
