When Sachin retired from international cricket, he had 15921 runs in 200 Test matches at an average of 53.78. No batsman has been able to break this record of Sachin till now. At the same time, legendary former Australian player Ricky Ponting has now named Joe Root, not Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma, who can be successful in breaking this record of Sachin.
Root has improved a lot as a batsman in the last few years
Ricky Ponting said in his statement on the ICC review that Joe Root is a player who can break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of scoring the most runs. Root is only 33 years old and is about 4000 runs behind Sachin’s record. Now it will all depend on how many more Test matches Root plays from here onwards. If Root plays 10 to 14 Test matches a year, then he will either come close to Sachin’s record or break it in the next 3-4 years. If Root’s performance is seen in the last few years, then he has improved a lot. Now after completing a half-century, he is also able to convert it into a big score. We were not seeing this before.
Right now Root is at number seven in terms of scoring the most runs
While Sachin Tendulkar is at the top in terms of scoring the most runs in Test cricket, if we talk about Joe Root, he has scored 12027 runs in 143 Test matches. He is at number 7 in this list. In such a situation, he will have a chance to leave behind Kumar Sangakkara and Alastair Cook in the upcoming 3-match Test series against Sri Lanka. While Sangakkara has scored 12400 runs in Tests, Cook has 12472 runs to his name.
