Kolkata, The Election Commission of India has issued a notification on Thursday for the voting to be held on April 26 on three Lok Sabha seats under the second phase of Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal. In the second phase of Lok Sabha elections, voting will be held in Darjeeling, Raiganj and Balurghat Lok Sabha seats of the state.
Among the major candidates contesting in this phase, BJP state president and Balurghat MLA Sukant Majumdar will face Biplab Mitra of Trinamool Congress (TMC). TMC has made Gopal Lama its candidate against BJP MLA Raju Bista from Darjeeling seat.
BJP MLA from Kurseong Bishnu Prasad Sharma has announced that he will contest the Darjeeling seat as an independent candidate against the party’s official candidate. Sharma had told PTI that he will remain in the BJP even while contesting the elections as an independent, and the party can take any disciplinary action as per its wish, but he does not intend to break ties with the party on his own.
TMC has made Krishna Kalyani, the sitting MLA from Raiganj Lok Sabha constituency, its candidate from this Lok Sabha seat. At the same time, BJP has fielded Tirik Pal from this seat, while Imran Ali Ramz, popularly known as Victor, will contest on Congress ticket. The last date for filing nominations under the second phase is April 4. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on April 5 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 8.
